TIMES SQUARE THEATRES: A New Century, A New Style
An Exhibition Focusing on the Architectural Trends in Broadway Theatres
On View: Thursday, January 11 to Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at The Municipal Art Society 457 Madison Ave. at 51st Street New York City. Gallery Hours: 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed on Thursdays and Sundays)
The exhibition includes 8-foot panels, laden with architects' plans, photographs and historical data, surrounding artifacts from the theatres are showcased. The story features the connection between a theatre and the shows it presented. It explores the architecture of theatre design from the last Victorian playhouse at the start of the 20th century and then into the future. This journey reflects society's developing trends and values while highlighting challenges the architects faced.

Panel Discussion: "What is the Future of Theatres on Broadway?"
Theatre producer/owner Stewart F. Lane will moderate a discussion among representatives from such theatre owners as Jujamcyn Theatres, Manhattan Theatre Club and Nederlander Organization. They will consider the changing nature of Times Square, the impact of air rights, changes in technology and audience demand.

Lecture: "Another O'p'nin', Another Theatre - Broadway's Evolution"
Exhibition curator Craig Morrison, a theatre restoration architect, historian and author of the recently published book Theatres will give the lecture. With a backdrop of challenges facing 20th century theatre architects, such as new staging technologies, literary styles and audiences being pulled away by radio and television, Mr. Morrison will tell the story of how Broadway theatres flourished and matured.

Walking Tour: "Times Square: New Theatres for a New Century"
Meet at the New Victory Theatre in Times Square on 42nd Street west of Broadway
Urban
Historian Timothy White will conduct a walking tour of Broadway theatres that will highlight Times Square as it grew into the world's most compact and vibrant theatre district during the 20th century. Among the theatres he will stop at are the New Victory, New Amsterdam, Booth, Marquis and Palace. Mr. White will point out how theatre design changed as architects kept up with evolving technology, literary styles and audience demand.
