Local One Member Joe Goldman Receives New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Individual Artist Grant

Local One member Joe Goldman was awarded a New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) - Individual Artist Grant (Media category) for the post-production of his feature-length documentary, "Fishermen of Mackerel Cove." The grant amount, of $14,500, will be used toward non-linear editing equipment costs.

NYSCA grants are based upon competitive application, reviewed once a year, based on the artist's proposal and sample work. The grant and all contributions are dispensed through a fiscal sponsor (in this case, the New York Foundation for the Arts - NYFA), which provides the tax-deductible 501c3 status required).

Public announcement is made in September, on their Web site, www.nysca.org. Usually about 30 artists out of 500 or so applicants in the filmmaking category are awarded grants.

Earlier this spring, Goldman also received a smaller grant from the Maine Humanities Council toward the project.

Goldman has had meetings with Kenneth M. Curtis (former two-term Governor of Maine), and others, including the Director of the Maine Maritime Museum, and the former Chancellor of the University of Maine; who will assist him seeking the approximately $100,000 required over and above the NYSCA grant to complete the project. The major remaining hurdle is the cost for a telecine transfer (16mm motion picture negative to digital format – digibeta), which will enable the final edit to be a broadcast master, at an extimated cost of $40,000.
